From manufacturers to agents and suppliers, there are many challenges in supply chain management. To address many of the obstacles involved in supporting dynamic supply chain management, researchers from around the world engage in a Trading Agent Competition, designed by researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the Swedish Institute of Computer Science.

CSE students Kevin Arnold and Clifton Peters have found an innovative way to meet their master’s program requirements, while helping the community though a new school project. The duo started a master’s project a last fall aimed at improving student data management for guidance counselors in the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS).

MSSE student assists in Autism project

MSSE student Mikko Niemioja has found an innovative project to work on as part of his degree program. He's implementing a web-based computer program called "The Visual Autism Symptom Scale" intended to be used by teachers to more accurately evaluate Autism in children and tailor lessons to their ability.

The project is the vision of Diane Halpin, a second-year doctoral student, seeking her degree in Special Education. Halpin is also the mother of a 10-year-old daughter with Autism.

IEEE's 14th Annual Requirements Conference is a success in Minneapolis

Downtown Minneapolis played host to the 14th International IEEE Requirements Engineering Conference Sept. 11-15, bringing academic and industry based software engineers from all over the world together to share ideas.

The conference, based at the Millennium Hotel, included presentation of the latest research results, workshops, tutorials, keynote speakers on a variety of topics, as well as a chance for engineers to network and explore Minneapolis.

Approximately 315 people attended the conference. Of this group, about a third were industry practitioners and two thirds were academic researchers and students. Program Chair Dr. Martin Glinz, from the University of Zurich, Switzerland, said that the conference attracted more participants than expected.

Anjali Joshi wins Best Paper Award

Anjali Joshi wins Best Paper of Track at the Digital Avionics Systems Conference for her paper A Proposal for Model-based Safety Analysis.

A Proposal for Model-based Safety Analysis" was awarded best paper of the Open Systems Architecture track at this year's Digital Avionics Systems Conference (DASC). The DASC technical program comprised of over 170 papers organized into 14 tracks that reflected key research and applications within the individual subject areas in the field of digital avionics. Anjali wrote the paper in collaboration with Dr. Steven P. Miller and Dr. Michael W. Whalen of Rockwell Collins Inc., and Prof. Mats Heimdahl of the CSE department and UMSEC.

Eric Van Wyk wins McKnight Land-Grant Professorship

Dr. Eric Van Wyk has won a prestigious 2005-2007 McKnight Land-Grant Professorship for his project "Extensible Programming Languages for Cost-Effective Development or Reliable Software Systems." Dr. Van Wyk is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

The McKnight Land-Grant Professorship is awarded by the University of Minnesota Graduate School which describes the program as follows:

Eric Van Wyk Wins NSF CAREER Award

Dr. Eric Van Wyk has received a prestigious CAREER award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project "An Extensible Compiler Framework for Modular Seamless Language Extensions." Dr. Van Wyk is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

Mats Heimdahl Receives Teaching Award

On Monday, April 26, UMSEC Director and Associate Professor Mats Heimdahl was awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award for Outstanding Contributions to Graduate and Professional Education and was inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Teachers in a ceremony in the McNamara Alumni Center's Memorial Hall.
