This Month’s Meeting Topic:

Charles Babbage Institute (CBI) and Anderson Library visit including a tour of the Archive Caverns

Speaker: Jeffrey Yost, PhD., Director, Charles Babbage Institute and Faculty, Program in the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine

Professor Yost is a historian of science and technology. His research projects include a book project on the history of the computer services industry (under contract with MIT Press), and a book project on the history of computer security. He was a past Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Annals of the History of Computing, and continue to serve on the journal’s board (as well as several other editorial boards). He was Principal Investigator on a $488,000 four-year National Science Foundation-sponsored project, “Building a Future for Software History.” Professor Yost has led or co-led more than $1.6 million in National Science Foundation-sponsored projects, and has conducted and published more than 70 research-grade oral histories.

Abstract:

Professor Yost will review the Charles Babbage Institute research program, the oral history program, and the archives. A high light of the meeting will be a tour of both the CBI suite and more importantly, the underground cavern where the archives are located.

The Charles Babbage Institute (CBI) is an archives and research center dedicated to preserving the history of information technology and promoting and conducting research in the field. CBI is located in Elmer L. Andersen Library, a state-of-the-art facility designed for Archives and Special Collections. Primary support for CBI is provided by the University of Minnesota, through the College of Science and Engineering and the University Libraries. Additional support is provided by corporate donors and individuals through the Friends of CBI.
